Once the berries have done their job flavouring the liqueur they are not discarded. They are lovingly bathed in a rich dark chocolate and transformed into a bar of pure indulgence - the perfect treat for the chocoholic.
In 2004, we the Joneses took part in a project called MENTERRA an ambitious and innovative three-year long pilot project aiming to develop new crops and plants, as well as traditional and indigenous ones. This is where we got to trial the aronia plants.
Aerona Liqueur and our other products are all made from aronia berries, sometimes called black chokeberry, the fruit of the deciduous shrub native to eastern North America. It is sometimes used in landscapes for its creamy white flowers in late spring and colourful flame red autumn foliage contrasted with dark berries. The pea-sized, violet-black berries are harvested in autumn and have a strong, stable natural colour with a dry and sour flavour.
Aerona has its origins in Celtic languages and it is predominantly used in Welsh. Aerona is the female gender of the Welsh word aeron meaning ‘berry’.
